What a surprise to discover such cool art in the middle of La Paz, Bolivia. Their art scene is alive and thriving. I found a lot of the art to be as impressive and interesting as any art in museums I’ve seen in Amsterdam, Madrid, and Paris.

I’ve always had a soft spot for collages, so I particularly liked the pieces with pictures within pictures and patchwork quilt style pieces exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Art that I visited with my Dutch travel companion, Ben Dijk.

The pieces with Che Guevara were particularly captivating, with tiny pictures of scenes from Che’s life painted into every millimetre of the huge murals. The more you look, the more you see. Nothing is a solid bit of color, it is all a composite of other pictures. Zoom in to see what I mean, if you can. What a skilled artist.

I was also intrigued by the sculpture of the miner nailed to the cross. What a powerful image. I was completely impressed by how the artist suggested the body of the miner using the bare minimum of metal bits to form the outline of the figure.

I hope you enjoy this little armchair art gallery tour coming to you from thousands of kms away!
