Now I understand why Conde Naste rates San Pedro de Atacama, Chile as one of the top adventure vacation spots in the world. There really is something special about the place, and the desert terrain is really interesting all around this tiny resort town.

There is a lot to do for every level of tourist, from those that like to bum around restaurants with incredibly tasty food to those that like to be outside doing extreme adventure sports, like sand dune surfing. I liked that there were plenty of interesting tours in the medium range of activity. The sun was hot in the day, although it cooled down quickly at night, making strenuous activity seem crazy.

Tours in the area include a sunset walk in the Valle de la Luna, a visually stunning series of valleys that have an impressive range of rock formations, sand dunes, and cliffs stacked like layer cakes of different coloured rocks and salt crystal layers. You can get up at 3:30 a.m. to catch the geyser tour – a drive up into the mountains to a valley filled with steaming geysers and a geothermal pool to soak your cold bones in. You can take astronomy tours of the night sky, like the one I took through Celestial Explorations which I highly recommend. The most heavily advertised tour is for a 3 or 4 day jeep tour of the massive Salar Uyuni Salt Flats and desert just across the border in Bolivia.\

I did them all and will post separate blogs to talk about each one. (I already posted a story about the astronomy tour I took.)This was one of the most enjoyable week vacations I’ve ever had.

The photo gallery presented here offers a preview of the places I saw in and around San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile.
